How do you get to Sintra from Lisbon?
By train. The official Pena page points visitors to the CP Sintra Line, which leaves from Lisbon’s Rossio, Oriente and Entrecampos stations. From Rossio, in the city centre, the ride takes about 40 minutes on CP’s urban timetable.
Fares and timetables change, so check them on the CP website or at the station. You can load urban train fares on a rechargeable transport card sold in Lisbon’s stations.
How do you get from Sintra station up to Pena?
Take Scotturb bus 434 from Sintra station, the route the official Pena page recommends. It climbs through the historic centre to the park. Scotturb sells single and day tickets; we could not confirm current fares from Scotturb’s own pages, so check them on board or on the Scotturb website.
Walking up from the town is possible but steep. Parques de Sintra sells a guided “Pena Trail” walk from the town at €35 per adult for those who want to do it with a guide.
What visitors say about the bus
Visitor reports often mention queues and crowded buses at busy times, with unpredictable waits. Several travellers say Uber, Bolt or taxis were easier around Sintra, and one January 2026 visitor found Bolt cheaper and more convenient than expected for the ride up towards Pena. A car does not skip traffic, though: if the hill road is jammed, the ride waits too. Going early matters more than the transport you choose.
Can you drive to Pena Palace?
No, not to the top. Private cars cannot drive up to Pena from Sintra’s historic centre. The official page tells drivers to park in Sintra’s historic centre or in the outer car parks (Pena page), then take the bus. Parking near the centre fills up fast; the train is simpler.
From the park gate to the palace
The palace is on the hilltop, about 30 minutes uphill from the park entrance. There are two park entrances, the Main Entrance and the Lakes Entrance; the shuttle and the palace route start from the Main Entrance.
Visitors report anything from 10 to 20 minutes or more on foot, depending on pace and route; plan on the official 30. The shuttle is a small shuttle every 15 minutes between the main park entrance and the palace: first ascent 9:00, last ascent 18:15; last departure from the palace 18:30. It costs €4.50 return (ages 6+), and the official conditions say it must be bought in advance (ticket conditions). Visitors report waits of 15 to 40 minutes for it in high season.
Would a tour be easier?
If you want one booking for transport and entry, a tour from Lisbon is simpler. The cheapest only enter the park and terraces; others include the palace ticket or offer it as an option. Compare them in our tours guide or see the full day trip plan from Lisbon.
