Parques de Sintra offers visitors with a disability 50% off for visitors with a disability, with proof; a companion enters free, and identified assistance dogs are allowed (accessibility page, 2026). The main challenge at Pena is the hill: the palace is about 30 minutes uphill from the park entrance, so the park shuttle matters.
In short
- Discount: 50% off for visitors with a disability, with proof; a companion enters free.
- Shuttle: every 15 minutes from the main entrance, €4.50 return, bought in advance.
- Assistance dogs: allowed when identified.
- Tickets can be requested in advance with an online form and a disability document.
What discounts are there?
The official accessibility page sets a reduction of 50% on tickets for Pena and the other parks and palaces, with proof when requested, and says that no admission fee is charged to a companion of a person with a disability (Parques de Sintra).
Visitors with a disability can also request tickets in advance through an online form, with a valid disability document attached. Parques de Sintra reviews and confirms each request; submitting the form does not confirm the visit.
How do you get up to the palace?
Take the park shuttle from the main entrance: a small shuttle every 15 minutes between the main park entrance and the palace: first ascent 9:00, last ascent 18:15; last departure from the palace 18:30. The return trip costs €4.50 for ages 6 and over and must be bought in advance (ticket conditions).
What about inside the palace?
The official accessibility page says information on physical access is available for each site, but the Pena-specific details were not part of the pages we could read. Before you go, contact Parques de Sintra (+351 21 923 73 00) about steps, lifts and routes inside the palace for your needs.
Visitors describe the site as more physical than it looks: uphill sections, steps, uneven paving and long distances between points, plus queues for the shuttle at busy times (reports of 15 to 40 minutes in high season). Keep the day simple, avoid stacking other hilly sights the same day, and use a car or taxi between sites if that makes the day easier.
For timing and the shuttle, see opening hours; for prices, ticket prices.
