Pena Palace: 6 Mistakes to Avoid (Tickets, Timing, Car)

Almost every bad day at Pena comes from the same six mistakes. Here is how to avoid each one.

Sorted by price, lowest first. Prices from the booking platform; the price at checkout is the one that counts.

Visitors crowding the terraces of the Pena Palace

The most expensive mistake at Pena is arriving late for your palace slot: palace tickets are for one date and entry time; there is no tolerance for delays, you cannot go in early, and a missed slot is not refunded (Parques de Sintra, 2026). The other five are about the car, the climb and the ticket type. All six are avoidable.

Pena is easy to visit once you know its rules. Almost every bad day here comes from the same few mistakes, all avoidable.

The six mistakes to avoid at Pena

Arriving late for your palace time

What goes wrong

The time on your ticket is your entry time at the palace door, not at the park gate. There is no tolerance for delays, and a missed slot is not refunded.

What to do instead

Be at the park entrance at least 45 minutes before your slot: the walk up takes about 30 minutes. If your plans change, reschedule online in advance.

Expecting to go in early

What goes wrong

If you reach the palace before your booked time, you will not be let in early. People who rush up then stand and wait.

What to do instead

Use spare time in the park first. The Essential Visit ticket covers the whole park, so you can see the gardens before or after the palace.

Planning to drive up to the palace

What goes wrong

Private cars cannot drive up to Pena from Sintra’s historic centre. Drivers end up circling for parking far below.

What to do instead

Take the CP train from Lisbon to Sintra and Scotturb bus 434 up to Pena, or book a tour with transport.

Hoping to buy the park shuttle on the spot

What goes wrong

The palace sits on a hill about 30 minutes’ walk from the park entrance. The small shuttle up needs a ticket bought in advance.

What to do instead

Add the round-trip transfer when you book if you have children, limited mobility or a tight slot.

Buying the park ticket and expecting the palace

What goes wrong

The cheaper “Visit to the Park” ticket does not include the palace interior. You can walk around the outside, but not go in.

What to do instead

For the rooms, buy the Essential Visit (palace + park) or the Complete Visit, which adds the Private Apartments.

Assuming every ticket shows the royal apartments

What goes wrong

The Essential Visit covers the New Palace wing. The Private Apartments, such as the bedroom of Ferdinand II, are only on the Complete, Guided or Theatrical visits.

What to do instead

If the royal rooms matter to you, book the Complete Visit at one of its fixed start times. Groups are capped at 20 people.

The mistakes visitors make beyond the rules

Travellers’ reports add a few that no rulebook mentions: trying to see every Sintra sight in one day, underestimating the transport between them, ignoring how physical a mountain visit is, and losing the morning to queues when the park and terraces would have been enough. Our honest take on whether Pena is worth it covers them.

Why are the rules so strict?

The palace route is narrow and visits run on fixed entry times, so Parques de Sintra admits visitors by slot. The official conditions say there is no delay tolerance and that you cannot enter before your booked time (ticket conditions).

The simplest way to get it right

  1. Book the Essential Visit online and note the entry time (which ticket).
  2. Come by train and bus 434, not by car (getting there).
  3. Be at the park gate at least 45 minutes before your slot, or add the shuttle.
  4. See the park before or after: it is included.

Questions people ask

What happens if I miss my Pena Palace time slot?

You cannot enter and the ticket is not refunded: palace tickets are for one date and entry time; there is no tolerance for delays, you cannot go in early, and a missed slot is not refunded.

Can I go into Pena Palace before my time slot?

No. If you arrive at the palace before your booked time, you wait until it.

Does the park ticket include the palace?

No. The park-only ticket (€12) covers the Temple of Columns, the High Cross (Cruz Alta), the Valley of the Lakes, the Queen’s Fern Valley, the Camellia Garden, Pena Farm and the Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla, but not the palace rooms.
